HS Academics

Art and design classes at NGHS provide students with basic knowledge of art media and processes allowing them to be proficient in expressing their ideas in two and three dimensional formats, thus producing their own works of art. Through the use of reference books, videos, demonstrations, online resources, and sample works of art, students will learn about various processes, art history, and currently working artists. Emphasis will be put on learning the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students will be able to make connections between artwork on the process in which it was created, effectively critique artwork, and know how to demonstrate their own ideas. Pre-requisites for any of the high school level classes include Foundations I and Foundations II. Foundations I allows students to enroll in Graphic Arts, Painting, and/or Drawing. Foundations II allows students to enroll in Metals or Ceramics. Both Foundations courses are recommended for enrollment in Senior Studio. Painting, Drawing, Metals, and Ceramics may all be repeated at an advanced level for another credit and advanced curriculum. The art classes culminate in Senior Studio, a class for seniors wanting to develop a portfolio of work at a more independent level.

We will continue to develop the relationship between science and technology through a thematic approach to science. We incorporate relevance by applying classroom science to the world in which we live.

Knowledge

At NGHS, we integrate the specific curriculum outcomes as related to technological/ environmental concerns.  Students are encouraged to construct knowledge and to demonstrate this understanding in a multitude of ways, through testing, model building, informed decision making, and applied critical thinking questions.

Skills

Throughout our science courses and science program at NGHS, the skills of initiating and planning, performing and recording, analyzing and interpreting are exercised to various degrees depending on what outcome is being reached and in what subject area.

Attitudes

Students are encouraged to develop attitudes that support scientific and technological knowledge for the mutual benefit of self, society, and the environment. We as science educators attempt to instill an appropriate attitude through our own enthusiasm, our own interest in science, through students' interest in science and inquiry, and through developing good lab safety procedures.

Numeracy/Scientific Inquiry

Students are asked to pose questions and discuss possible explanations including those views that are contradictory as to accelerate learning and to construct new knowledge. This is accomplished in a multitude of ways, including experimental design, hypotheses testing, and manipulation of controlled variables. As a scientific endeavor, through inquiry, we don't ‘prove', but rather we attempt to support or verify our thinking.

Business & Information Technology's primary mission is to prepare students for business occupations and to teach students about business for their everyday lives. Education about Business & Information Technology focuses on those aspects of business that affect every member of society, whereas preparation for business occupations focuses on the preparation of individuals to own or operate their own business or be a worker in a variety of business functions.

Rapidly developing technology and the globalization of the economy are challenging our workforce to stay abreast of developments and to look at the world of business beyond traditional borders.  Because technology skills/programs/delivery systems are in a constant state of flux, our students are also being given the motivation and confidence in their abilities to continue to educate themselves to remain capable of using and expanding their skills as technology requires.

Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences to prepare young people to become responsible citizens.

The purpose of social studies is to develop social understanding and civic efficacy (the readiness and willingness to assume citizenship responsibilities and to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a democratic society.)

The social studies curriculum builds four capacities in young people: disciplinary knowledge, thinking skills, commitment to historical milestones and democratic values, and citizen participation.

To achieve these objectives, we offer at the 9thgrade a social studies class that surveys the various areas of study within the social studies field.  In addition we offer US History, Cold War to Terrorism, Eastern and Western Civilization History, AP US History, Government and AP Government, Psychology, Contemporary Issues, AP Psychology, and Service Learning courses.

The mission of agricultural education is to prepare students for careers in the agriculture industry, to support students in their career choices, and to develop leadership skills in students to benefit their community and the food, fiber, and natural resource systems.

This large industry has many possibilities for you to further your career skill area. We cover a vast array of environmental issues, the field of Veterinarian Medicine, the entire Plant and Soil science field, Animal Science, Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Leadership and Exploratory courses for those who wish to engage in multiple topic areas.  Therefore Agri-Science offers something for everyone.

World language offerings currently include four levels each of German and Spanish at the high school, with an introduction to both languages at the middle school.  Students are given the opportunities to  practice using the target language in areas of speaking, writing and listening.  In addition to becoming proficient in the target language, the students will be exposed to the culture and traditions of their respective countries.  Extra curricular offerings include the possibility to participate in a German exchange program or a trip to Spain.

Music is an essential component of the academic curriculum in the School District of New Glarus.  The New Glarus Music Department strives to reach students' individual and collective potential through the study and performance of music in an effort to form a solid foundation for future development.  We offer our students glimpses of the many meanings and consequences of musical thought, observation, and activity.  We try to instill a common love of learning by exploring history, culture, humanity, and life-skills illustrated in the music we perform.  Finally, we aim to acquire an understanding and appreciation of the relationship between music, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.

Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) is a branch of Career and Technical Education. FACS course content focuses on individuals and families across the life span to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse global society. Courses focus on a variety of life skills that students will need to be successful teenagers and adults. All courses will provide students with skills that will make them College, Career and Life ready!

With 8 elective courses to choose from at New Glarus High School there is a course fit for every student. Course options include: Family, Food and Society, Personal Finance, Family Relationships, Exploring Hospitality, Creative Foods, Cultural Cuisine, Intro to Health Science Careers, and Medical Terminology. 

Courses include a variety of activities that will promote self- awareness, personal management and development of skills needed to achieve individual goals relating to family, home, career and the community. FACS has a unique focus on families, work, and their interrelationships.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. FCCLA has more than 220,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters from 50 state associations. FCCLA is the Ultimate Leadership Experience is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus.

New Glarus has a Middle School and High School chapter. Many student led activities are planned, promoted and implemented through the chapter. Some New Glarus FCCLA activities include: the American Red Cross Blood Drive, Halloween Fun Night, Bucky Book fundraiser and many competitive event student led projects are accomplished throughout the community.  New Glarus has also had a strong representation at the State level for FCCLA with a State Officer on the State Executive Council for the past 5 years.
